Pakistan’s First Female Boxing Champion: The Historic Win of Aliya Soomro

On May 11, 2025, in a moment that will forever be etched in the annals of Pakistani sports, Aliya Soomro, a rising star from Lyari, Karachi, became the first Pakistani woman to win a world boxing title. In a professional fight at World Syme Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, under TL Boxing Promotion, she knocked out Suthida Gunya Noch of Thailand in only 45 seconds. Her victory is important not just because of the medal, but as a message to girls everywhere that they can achieve greatness, regardless of where they live.

The Victory Happened Quickly, Fulfilling a Long-Held Dream

Aliya’s success in the match was powerful and remarkable. Focused from the start, she knocked out her opponent in the first minute, stunning the crowd and quickly gaining attention online. This was no ordinary win. For Pakistan, Sindh, and especially Lyari, it was a moment of great significance, given the community’s legacy of producing talented athletes despite difficult circumstances. Aliya’s success in Thailand has brought immense honor to women’s sports in Pakistan and made her an inspiration to many.

Homecoming Hero: Celebration in Karachi

After returning to Pakistan, Aliya was welcomed as a hero. Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah invited her to a special ceremony at CM House, hosted by the Sindh government in her honor. An Ajrak, a traditional Sindhi cloth, was presented to her, along with a cash prize of Rs. 1 million in recognition of her achievement.

“Aliya has made Pakistan proud on a global stage. She’s not just a champion in the ring—she’s a beacon of courage and inspiration for every girl in our country,” said the Chief Minister.

Rising from Lyari: Resilience Beyond the Ring

Aliya grew up in Kalakot, a neighborhood in Lyari that has endured years of violence, political conflict, and economic neglect. Sports have long held an important place in Lyari. Football, boxing, and martial arts have been inspiring choices for the youth.

As she once said in a podcast interview:

“I kept insisting, insisting that I wanted to train. I didn’t look like a boxer, but after the match, people said—‘She’s the one.’”

Aliya’s success now marks the next step in that proud athletic legacy.

The Long Game: A Story Worth Telling

Aliya faced both financial hardship and gender stereotypes, but she showed incredible strength and determination. Aliya shared how she overcame every obstacle, saying, “There was no tracksuit, no boxing gloves, no kit. But I made it work.”

Beyond the Ring: Redefining Women’s Sports in Pakistan

By winning, Aliya has made a significant impact on women’s sports in Pakistan. In a society where girls are often not encouraged to pursue sports, her victory sends a powerful message: talent has no gender, and dreams have no limits.

Since her story surfaced, hashtags like #AliaSoomro, #LyariPride, and #WomenInSportsPK have trended across social media. As a role model for young girls, especially in underrepresented communities, she has shown that representation truly matters.

A Country’s Treasure, A Potential Champion

What makes Aliya Soomro’s story extraordinary is the passion, persistence, and purpose that drove her from the alleys of Lyari to the global boxing stage. She has become one of Pakistan’s greats, winning a world title despite facing poverty, prejudice, and pressure.
