Apple has officially pulled back the curtain on its most ambitious Pro iPhone yet. Announced from Cupertino on September 9, 2026, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arrive with a genuinely new camera system, Apple’s fastest-ever A20 Pro chip, the biggest battery jump the company has ever shipped, and a smarter, more conversational Siri built on iOS 27. The launch spans more than 65 countries and regions in the first wave, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, the UAE, the UK, and the United States. Design and Display
The 2026 Pro lineup keeps Apple’s premium build language but refines it in meaningful ways. The enclosure uses 85 percent recycled aluminum, and one of the most noticeable changes is a redesigned, smaller Dynamic Island that is more useful than before. Thanks to advanced display technology, the new Dynamic Island can show up to three Live Activities at the same time, so you can track a flight, a ride, and a live score without leaving your home screen, while still handling Face ID for secure unlocking and payments.
Both models continue to offer Face ID and come in the same four elegant colors, with burgundy joining the classic black, silver, and glacier options. The result is a phone that feels familiar in the hand but noticeably more capable at a glance.
The Camera: Variable Aperture Changes Everything
The headline upgrade this year is the camera. Apple describes the new 48MP Fusion Main camera as the most advanced it has ever built, and for the first time an iPhone gets true variable aperture. Six laser-cut blades, driven by a new rotor mechanism, physically open and close to shift between aperture settings, and the camera can intelligently widen all the way to f/1.48 for dramatically better low-light shots.
For everyday users, this means sharper group photos with more of the frame in focus and cleaner night shots. For creators and professionals, a new set of Pro controls in the Camera app allows manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed, and white balance, plus a live histogram for checking exposure. Apple Reference Image: Proving a Photo Is Real
A standout new feature is Apple Reference Image. The Main camera’s new sensor can sign every pixel it captures, and when you shoot in the new Reference mode, Private Cloud Compute builds an unalterable reference version of the shot. You can compare it side by side with your edited photo in the Photos app, almost like a digital negative, to see exactly what changed. Combined with upcoming support for the SynthID standard for AI-generated content, this is a genuine step forward for photojournalists and anyone who cares about image authenticity.
Performance: A20 Pro and a New Cooling System
Powering both models is the new A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. It pairs a 6-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators, a 7-core GPU that is up to 40 percent faster than the A19 Pro for graphics, and 50 percent more memory bandwidth. A new Dual 16-core Neural Engine, 32 cores in total, doubles the AI processing power of the previous generation, which is exactly what the new on-device intelligence features need.
To keep all that power running smoothly, Apple redesigned the thermal system. A next-generation vapor chamber with three times more surface area than the iPhone 17 Pro attaches directly to the chip, enabling up to a 40 percent gain in sustained performance, the highest in iPhone history. Connectivity is handled by the Apple-designed N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread, alongside the new C2 modem that delivers faster uploads while using 15 percent less energy.
Battery Life and Charging
Battery life takes its biggest leap ever. eSIM-only models deliver up to 36 hours of video playback on the iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The Pro can charge to 50 percent in around 15 minutes wired, or 50 percent in 30 minutes wirelessly. On the Pro Max, just five minutes of wired charging is enough for roughly seven hours of video playback, making it hard to ever get caught out on a long day.
Software: iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and the New Siri
Both phones ship with iOS 27, which becomes available as a free update on Monday, September 14. The big story is Siri AI, an entirely rebuilt Siri powered by Apple Intelligence that is more personal, capable, and conversational. It can draw on your personal context across messages, emails, and photos, understand what is on your screen to take action, and answer questions on almost any topic. A new Siri mode in the Camera app can identify and act on whatever you point it at.
Apple Intelligence also brings smarter photo editing with Spatial Reframing, Extend, and improved Clean Up, plus a more photorealistic Image Playground and a handy Notify Me feature in Safari that watches web pages for restocks or price drops. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Apple is also offering trade-in credit of up to $885 instantly through Apple Trade In, with select carrier deals reaching up to $1,200 for eligible trade-ins.
