Searches for “Pasni”, “Pasni Beach” and “Balochistan beaches” keep rising because travellers are tired of crowded Karachi beaches and want somewhere wide, clean and calm. Pasni is a working fishing town, not a polished resort, and that is part of its charm. This guide covers where it is, how to get there, when to go, what to do, what is nearby and how to stay safe.

Where Is Pasni?

Pasni is a coastal town in Gwadar District, in the Makran division of Balochistan. It is the main town of Pasni Tehsil, which covers 4,822 square kilometres and had 74,128 residents in the 2023 census, according to Wikipedia. The town sits on the Arabian Sea between Ormara to the east and Gwadar to the west. Gwadar is about 136 km to the west, according to Zameen’s guide to Balochistan’s coastal belt.

Fishing is the backbone of local life. You will see boats, nets and fish markets at the waterfront, and local fisherfolk have long asked for their fish harbour to be restored and made fully active.

How to Reach Pasni From Karachi

By Road on the Makran Coastal Highway

The Makran Coastal Highway (N-10) runs 653 km along the sea from Karachi to Gwadar. It was built by the Frontier Works Organisation, with work starting in 2002 and finishing in December 2004. Before it opened, Wikipedia notes, the journey took at least two days on a dirt track. Today a Karachi to Gwadar drive takes around six to seven hours without long stops.

Pasni lies before Gwadar when you travel from Karachi, so expect roughly 500 km and a full day on the road if you include breaks. This distance is our own estimate from the published figures, so please confirm it on your phone map before you leave. Older travel guides, including the previous version of this article, quote about 450 km, so figures differ depending on the route and the starting point in Karachi.

The road passes Hub, the Hingol National Park area and Ormara, which sits roughly midway between Karachi and Gwadar and about 360 km from Karachi.

By Air

Pasni has an airport, but flights have been limited and irregular. Check with airlines before you plan around it. Many travellers fly to Gwadar or drive from Karachi instead.

Road Trip Checklist

  • Fill your tank at Hub. Reports say there is no fuel or food on the long stretch past Zero Point, and mobile coverage is patchy.
  • Start before dawn so you arrive in daylight. Express Tribune’s guide to the highway advises against driving after dark.
  • Travel with more than one well-maintained vehicle and a group, not a lone car.
  • Carry a spare tyre, jack, tow rope, extra water, snacks and a power bank.
  • Carry your CNIC and keep copies. Expect security checkpoints.
  • Keep cash, as ATMs are rare away from Gwadar.

Best Time to Visit Pasni

October to March is the most comfortable season, with pleasant daytime temperatures and cool evenings. Local guides mention an annual fishing festival in March and April, but we could not find an official date, so ask locally before planning around it. From April to September the coast is hot and humid and summer temperatures can approach 40 degrees Celsius. The sea can also be rough in the monsoon months, and Astola Island is reported to be uninhabited from June to August because of the fishing off-season and heavy swell.

Things to Do in Pasni

Walk the Beach

The main attraction is the shoreline itself: long, open sand, few crowds and sunsets over the Arabian Sea. Bring water shoes, sun protection and a bag to carry your rubbish out. There are no developed beach facilities, so follow the rule of leaving nothing behind.

Visit the Fishing Harbour and Market

Early mornings are best, when boats return and fish are sorted. It is a good way to see how the town works and to buy fresh catch. Always ask before photographing people.

Take a Boat Trip to Astola Island

Astola, also called Haft Talar, is Pakistan’s largest offshore island at about 6.7 square kilometres. Wikipedia places it about 35 km southeast of Pasni and about 25 km offshore, with boats from Pasni taking roughly three hours. It is a Ramsar wetland and, since June 2017, Pakistan’s first marine protected area. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on its beach. Because it is protected, go only with experienced local boatmen, keep to the rules, and do not disturb wildlife.

Explore Local History

Local guides mention an old fort and the Kalmati Baloch heritage along this coast, as well as the memory of the 1945 earthquake and tsunami. Details vary between sources, so ask residents and respect local customs. Nearby Sotkagen Koh is described in some guides as a Harappan-era site, although we could not confirm details from an official source.

Camp and Stargaze

With little light pollution, the night sky is spectacular. If you camp, do so with a group and local guidance, set up well above the high tide line and never leave fires unattended.

Balochistan Beaches Near Pasni

Many travellers combine Pasni with other beaches along the same highway. The list below runs roughly from east to west.

If you only have a long weekend from Karachi, Kund Malir and Hingol are the easier targets. Pasni suits those who have three or more days and want to go further.

Where to Stay and What to Eat

Accommodation in Pasni is basic. Local guides mention Pasni Beach Resort, Hotel Sea Star and Pasni Classic Hotel, and Zameen mentions Jinnah Beach Club. We could not verify current standards, prices or availability, so call ahead and confirm. For more choice, many visitors base themselves in Gwadar and make a day trip to Pasni, or the reverse. Camping is another option for prepared groups.

Food is simple and seafood-focused. Expect grilled fish, crab curry and Balochi dishes at roadside restaurants. Choose busy places for freshness, and carry bottled water.

Safety, Permits and Responsible Travel

Road conditions on the coastal highway have improved, and the Express Tribune’s guide describes the coastal route as under coast guard and army surveillance. Even so, security conditions in parts of Balochistan can change quickly. Before you travel, check the latest news and advisories, tell family where you are going, and consider joining a reputable tour operator. Do not travel after dark.

On permits, we could not find a clear official rule requiring a special permit for Pakistani citizens to visit Pasni. Foreign visitors should check requirements with the relevant authorities. Expect checkpoints along the highway where officials may ask for your CNIC and vehicle details. Always confirm the current situation with local authorities or the Balochistan tourism department before departure.

  • Respect local customs and dress modestly, especially in town.
  • Ask permission before taking photos of people, women in particular.
  • Do not litter, and do not disturb turtles, birds or nests.
  • Buy from local fishermen and shops to support the community.
  • Swim carefully. There are no lifeguards, and currents can be strong.

What to Pack

  • Light breathable clothes, a jacket for cool evenings and a hat
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and insect repellent
  • Water shoes, towels and a first aid kit
  • Cash in small notes, a power bank and offline maps
  • Extra water, snacks and a bag for rubbish
